Neuromuscular and Neurogenetic disorders Program

This is a unique program with a comprehensive, seamlessly integrated clinical and research approach to tackle problems related to disorders of the neuromuscular system.

There are two multidisciplinary clinics which provide patients and their families with state-of-the-art care, clinical research trials, and neurologists. The large basic research laboratory is focused on finding the causes and effective treatments for diseases which affect motor neurons, particularly amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) and the hereditary spastic paraparesis (HSP).

The laboratory uses multiple approaches, including genetic and environmental studies to identify causes of disease, transgenic animal modeling to study disease mechanisms and evaluate potential treatments, and proteomic studies to identify potential disease markers.

Clinic patients and their families serve not only as sources of study materials, such as blood, spinal fluid and post-mortem tissue, but more importantly, provide inspiration our the laboratory research efforts.

The laboratory is also a student training site, from the undergraduate through post doctoral levels, grooming the next generation of researchers.

Make an Appointment
