Biography

A native of New York City, Dr. Bernstein attended the Bronx High School of Science, followed by Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, where he obtained a B.A. in biochemistry. As a participant in a combined MD/PhD program, he obtained a Ph.D. in molecular biology with Dr. Robert Roeder at The Rockefeller University, and then his medical degree from Cornell in 1996.

After an internship in internal medicine at Mt Sinai, in New York City, he was resident and chief resident in neurology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, where he won teaching awards from the medical students all three years he was there. He completed fellowships in Neurovascular Critical Care and Stroke at UCSF and Stanford, respectively. While at Stanford, he won the Lysia Forno Award for resident teaching from the neurology residents.

Dr. Bernstein sees patients in both the hospital and outpatient settings with issues related to cerebrovascular disease. His research overlaps with his clinical interests and encompasses stroke prevention, acute stroke treatment, and neuroprotection after cardiac arrest.
