Multiple sclerosis, transverse myelitis, optic neuritis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, neuromyelitis optica (Devic’s disease), other inflammatory demyelinating diseases
Research Interests Clinical trials in multiple sclerosis testing new therapeutic approaches, MS in the Hispanic population, clinically silent demyelinating disease, and the use of ocular coherence tomography as a possible marker for axonal loss and brain atrophy on MRI.
Biography

Dr. Derwenskus attended medical school at the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines, Iowa. Afterwards she did an osteopathic internship in Detroit followed by an allopathic internship in Chicago. She completed neurology residency at Case in Cleveland where she worked with Dr. John Leigh, a neuro-ophthalmologist studying eye movement abnormalities in MS patients. These patients were followed at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. Subsequently, she went to Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City to train with Drs. Fred Lublin and Aaron Miller at the Corinne Goldsmith Dickinson Center for Multiple Sclerosis. While there she participated in numerous clinical trials and earned a Master’s of Science degree in clinical research through the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She was awarded the Serono Pfizer MS Clinical Fellowship through the National MS Society. Dr. Derwenskus joined the Northwestern University Comprehensive MS Program in 2005 where she sees patients and continues to actively participate in clinical trials. She has numerous publications and speaks nationally on multiple sclerosis.
