| Biography |
Dr. Sufit was born and raised in the Washington DC area. As an undergraduate at Johns Hopkins University he participated in some bench research at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He then began his formal studies at the University of Virginia School of Medicine where he became fascinated with the nervous system leading to a neurology residency at the University of Pittsburgh. Following that he moved out to the University of Colorado where he spent one year of clinical training in the Neuromuscular Disease program with a research focus on inflammatory disease of muscle. This was followed by an additional year in bench research looking at mammalian endplate function as a model synapse. Thereafter he began his formal academic career as an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Making the choice to go into clinical as opposed to bench research he began working on treatment trials for ALS. In 1992 he made the switch to Northwestern University’s Department of Neurology that was building a new Neuromuscular Program. He currently directs the Lois Insolia ALS Clinic and the MDA clinic. Throughout his period here he has continued to do ALS clinical research as well as other clinical protocols focused on nerve and muscle disease. Projects have included nerve dysfunction in peripheral artery disease and treatment using autologous bone marrow transplant of immunologically mediated nerve and muscle diseases.
Dr. Sufit has served on several Data Safety and Monitoring Boards for both NIH and industry. In addition Dr. Sufit has been an ad hoc reviewer for Neurology, for ALS and Motor Neuron Diseases and for Dysphagia. |
