Our efforts combine busy clinical service where we practice evidence-based stroke care through Feinberg-affiliated sites and a very robust clinical research effort aimed at changing the state-of-the-art of stroke neurology. Patients are seen at Northwestern Memorial hospital, in the outpatient stroke clinics, and via tele-medicine at affiliated hospitals. Students are encouraged to join in both our clinical mission and our research mission. Faculty welcome medical student participation in our many research projects.
We have two fellowships in cerebrovascular disease. First, we offer an ACGME-accredited one-year clinical fellowship in Vascular Neurology. Research is an integral part of the fellowship, but the primary goal is to train the next generation of clinical leaders. Graduates are eligible to sit for the Vascular Neurology boards.
Second, we are one of the few centers in the U.S. to offer an NIH-funded research fellowship in Stroke Outcomes and Clinical Research. Graduates of clinical stroke fellowships are eligible to apply to this program for advanced training in stroke clinical research methodology.
Recently completed clinical trials have advanced stroke care on several fronts. We were leaders of the CRYSTAL-AF trial that examined the use of implantable devices to detect atrial fibrillation after stroke of unknown cause. We participated in the ARISTOTLE trial that resulted in the approval of the novel anticoagulant Apixaban (eliquis); the RESPECT trial examining PFO closure in stroke of unknown cause; and the DEFUSE-2 trial which defined the use of MRI in hyperacute stroke. Ongoing projects include a trial on the use of stem cells in acute stroke stroke; management of high risk TIA and minor stroke; the use of novel antiplatelet agents in patients with stroke; and several prospective registries and databases that offer interested students the chance to test hypotheses using our vast clinical material.
Our faculty work with patients though Feinberg's affiliated care facilities. Students have the opportunity to experience the range of acute stroke care on our Chicago campus at Northwestern Memorial Hospital including:
- Emergency department (thrombolysis)
- Angiography suite (clot extraction)
- Stroke unit
- Rehabiltiation unit
- Outpatient clinic
All patients are included in the teaching experience. All rounds are conducted in a didactic fashion with a vascular neurology attending. Collaboration with the vascular neurosurgery, neuro-interventional radiology, neuro-ICU, and cardiology teams is excellent at both the clinical and research level.
